Carbon-carbon composites suffer from high processing cost due to the densification step and from low ductility. The incorporation of fillers (nanoclay and SiC whisker) in carbon-carbon composites was reported to be effective for improving the oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures of carbon-carbon composites fabricated by CVI [1]. The incorporation of carbon nanotube (CNT) by in-situ growth of CNT on the carbon fiber was reported to increase the flexural strength and modulus by 31% and 73% respectively [2]. The incorporation of carbon nanofiber has negligible effect on the interlaminar shear strength [3]. This work is aimed at improving the mechanical properties of carbon-carbon composites by filler incorporation. Another objective is to use filler incorporation to facilitate the fabrication of high-quality carbon-carbon composites without densification processing. |
